Getting off to a good start

We asked some students and graduates what advice they could give new students to help you get off to a good start at Uni. Watch the video below to find out what they had to say.

Useful advice

If you are worried about daily tasks like laundry or buying food, go to the Students' Union and find the Help desk. You will be surprised at what they can help you with!

You are now on your way to a higher education qualification! You might be excited, nervous, relieved or all three at once. This is all completely normal – after all, higher education is a life-changing experience.

Now ask yourself what you expect your experience to be like. What are you looking forward to? What are you unsure about?

In the following activity, reflect on the statements, then make a note of your thoughts in the space below. Click 'Next' to move on to a new question.

I'm expecting my studies to be...

I'm unsure about...

I'm wondering if the other students in my subject area...

I'm excited that...

This course will help you learn more about:

  • What to expect from university or college and what is expected of you
  • How to make the most out of your experience
  • Where to go for advice, guidance and support.

Key terms

Higher education: Higher education is referred to in different ways in different regions and countries. We use the terms 'university' or 'college' to mean education beyond the post-compulsory secondary level – this means the education you choose to pursue! You may also hear terms such as 'uni', 'college', 'higher education institution' (HEI), 'higher education' (HE), 'further education' (FE) and 'technical college'. Many of these terms are used in the titles of institutions, others are used more colloquially or in reference to institutions in general.

Useful advice

If you haven't started your studies yet, take time to learn more about your subject area before the term starts. What does your department offer? What does it emphasise? What opportunities are available?

Having a clear idea of why you want to study your subject will help you stay motivated and take advantage of your first year.
